The Lowdown on Low Back Pain
(and Other Aches)

Is spine surgery risky?

Spine surgery used to be risky, but recent advances have changed that. Even twenty years ago one used to hear "horror stories" about back operations. Now, more than 95% of back surgeries completely eliminate pain and only about 1% are complicated by other problems. The commonest complications are pain, bleeding and infection. Avoid surgery if at all possible, but it would be foolish to suffer with pain for years if a simple operation could get rid of the problem. Most spine surgery is done minimally invasively and in many cases hospitalization is not even needed.
